I am on the Road the Tour has begun

September 21st

I’m in Kansas City staying with my good friend Joe. The first two days of driving were the worst. From PDX to Salt Lake City was a lot of rain and wind. Outside Boise it was raining so hard I had almost zero visibility. I was up at 5 am on the road just before 7. Pulled in to SLC around 10 pm. My night vision isn’t what it once was so the last 2 hours were really stressful.

Left around noon the following morning as I had a bunch of work to do. Went through Wyoming and it didn’t disappoint. Wyoming is beautiful and I hate it all at the same time. The weather changes constantly. I hit a snowstorm as I was going over the mountains towards the eastern part of the state. Hardly any visibility and I was white knuckling it for about 90 minutes. I have front wheel drive but my tires aren’t exactly new. I never slipped but it never felt real stable either.

It’s at times like this I question what the fuck I’m doing out on tour. This part really stresses me out. I hate it. After the snowstorm there were 40+ mph winds for the next few hours and I was getting blown all over the highway. Continue reading “I am on the Road the Tour has begun”

New Podcast & Indiegogo Crowdfunding Update

Check out this wonderful podcast with me done by Chris Martin. He’s done a bunch of these where he talks about “Getting Work To Work”. Interesting guy and a pretty terrific site. I am honored that he chose to interview me. Thanks Chris.

Here is the link – http://www.chrismartinstudios.com/gwtw/interview-kelley-baker-gwtw84/

Please check out our Crowdfunding campaign over at Indiegogo (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-road-dog-fall-tour/x/17085859#/)

The DFB and I want to hit the road late next month and take our book, Road Dog, out on tour.

Right now my campaign is kind of sucking as I got swamped with family stuff and some shit I don’t want to go in to at this point. So please check out my Indiegogo campaign and help however you can. If you can donate $5, $10, $15, it all helps!

My total budget is $19,000 and I’m trying to raise half on Indiegogo and the other half through sponsors. Since I’m an independent I have to pay for everything, usually up front. What will your money be used for? I need to order books, fix the van and make sure it’s up for the trip, fix my laptop, pay for shipping, we have promotion costs, gas, food, lodging and many other expenses that come up when we’re on the road.

Here is a clip from our campaign –

I already have bookings in various cities, among them – Kansas City, Houston, Nashville, Oxford MI, Wichita, Salt Lake City, Fort Worth, Dallas and I’m still booking more!

Please check out our campaign and if you can afford to donate something I’d really appreciate it.

Please visit this site often as I’ll be updating our Fall Tour.

“Road Dog is exceptional, thanks to its author, Kelley Baker, and Moses, his traveling companion. It is a joy to share their adventures, to smile, to laugh, to cry. Kelley Baker has the talent to keep the reader with him and Moses, to explore the joys and difficulties of life on the road, and to have the reader be part of it. Kelley Baker is honest and open. He dealt with a lot of tough stuff and he lays it out and we absorb it and understand. Kelley Baker writes so beautifully I shake my head in agreement even if I have never been to Iowa or Texas, or been on the road for weeks at a time…with a wonderful dog. Road Dog is a gem. Read it…feel it…love it.” – Freddi Carlip, Runner’s Gazette

What is Road Dog about? Well I’m glad you asked.

“In my youth, I’ve had the opportunity to go on the road with a ska/reggae band as a roadie. I’ve always dreamt of how to translate that to the world of filmmaking. Kelley’s book allows us to live vicariously through his adventures. Lastly, I’m not gonna lie to you, but this is one of the very few books that brought me to tears. I think it could be the best work that Baker has done. Worth the read!” – Scott McMahon, The Film Trooper Podcast

When I Fight Authority – Road Dog Reading

This is from my reading at O’Connor’s in March. This is the chapter – When I Fight Authority, from my book Road Dog. I was a little nervous starting out because this was my first public reading but as you can see after a couple pages the butterflies left and I got in to a pretty good rhythm.

I want to thank Enie Vaisburd for filming this and Don Campbell and Whit Draper for accompanying me. It was a great night. I hope you enjoy the clip.

Road Dog Reading at O’Connor’s Vault

“As Eat, Pray, Love is to love and spirituality, Road Dog is to the raucous, independent, and contented life.” – William M. Akers, author Your Screenplay Sucks!, Mrs. Ravenbach’s Way

“Kerouac meets Truffaut in this road trip gem. All the ache and passion of film-making, heart-felt by independent filmmaker, Kelley Baker on a trip across America. Enjoy this read as I did on this road well-traveled.” – Paul Diener, Producer

Here is a part of the Reading I did at O’Connor’s Vault in March. I am reading an excerpt from the chapter, The Fiona Tour. It’s about the time my daughter went out on tour with me when she was 15 and our first stop was an art gallery that had an exhibition of Sex Toys. I hope you like this excerpt more than Fiona liked the exhibition…

I want to thank Don Campbell and Whit Draper for their musical accompaniment, Enie Vaisburd for filming this and my daughter Fiona for putting up with her Dad.

Thanks for watching and if you don’t have your copy of Road Dog we can remedy that right now!

More Quotes For Road Dog

“Kelley Baker is a storyteller par excellence – on film and now in prose. In Road Dog we have the pleasure of journeying with “the Angry Filmmaker” as he careens across the American landscape with his dog Moses. I felt like I was riding shotgun the whole time. Awesome fun and also quite touching, too. A love poem to a special canine and to the open road.” – Beth Harrington, Independent Filmmaker

“Kerouac meets Truffaut in this road trip gem. All the ache and passion of film-making, heart-felt by independent filmmaker, Kelley Baker on a trip across America. Enjoy this read as I did on this road well-traveled.” – Paul Diener, Producer
