Fall Tour Update 7-27-17

As most of you know we’re going to be heading out on tour in September. This tour is going to be a lot more expensive than I thought so next week we’re going to kick off a crowdfunding campaign.

I need your help because touring is expensive especially with no publishing house behind me. I have to pay for everything, most of it up front. I need to order books, get the van fixed, upgrade my laptop, get a new hard drive and some memory cards, pay for gas, food, lodging and anything else that pops up while we’re out on the road.

I tell people that I make films because I have to. There’s something that burns deep inside of me that needs to create. I feel the same about writing. I wrote Road Dog because I had to. I had a story to tell. What’s the good of having a story to tell when there is no one around to listen?

That’s why I’m doing this tour. I want to tell as many people as I can about Road Dog.

I’m hoping you can all help either by donating and/or sharing our campaign with your friends.

“Road Dog is exceptional, thanks to its author, Kelley Baker, and Moses, his traveling companion. It is a joy to share their adventures, to smile, to laugh, to cry. Kelley Baker has the talent to keep the reader with him and Moses, to explore the joys and difficulties of life on the road, and to have the reader be part of it. Kelley Baker is honest and open. He dealt with a lot of tough stuff and he lays it out and we absorb it and understand. Kelley Baker writes so beautifully I shake my head in agreement even if I have never been to Iowa or Texas, or been on the road for weeks at a time…with a wonderful dog. Road Dog is a gem. Read it…feel it…love it.” – Freddi Carlip, Runner’s Gazette

What is Road Dog about? Well I’m glad you asked.

“In my youth, I’ve had the opportunity to go on the road with a ska/reggae band as a roadie. I’ve always dreamt of how to translate that to the world of filmmaking. Kelley’s book allows us to live vicariously through his adventures. Lastly, I’m not gonna lie to you, but this is one of the very few books that brought me to tears. I think it could be the best work that Baker has done. Worth the read!” – Scott McMahon, The Film Trooper Podcast

When I Fight Authority – Road Dog Reading

This is from my reading at O’Connor’s in March. This is the chapter – When I Fight Authority, from my book Road Dog. I was a little nervous starting out because this was my first public reading but as you can see after a couple pages the butterflies left and I got in to a pretty good rhythm.

I want to thank Enie Vaisburd for filming this and Don Campbell and Whit Draper for accompanying me. It was a great night. I hope you enjoy the clip.

Road Dog Reading June 21st at Friendly House (Portland, Oregon)

Hey Everybody, on June 21st at 7:30 pm I’m going to do a reading with an old friend of mine, Bob Calkins at Friendly House (1737 NW 26th, Portland 97210). We chose Friendly House because it’s in the neighborhood we grew up in. I’ll be reading from Road Dog and Bob will be reading from his book, Digger. The Case Of The Chimera Killer. We’re talking a night of “smart dogs and serial killers”. Come check it out! And tell your friends.

Look What I Found

I was going through the Angry Filmmaker Archives when I found some footage that I shot on the road back in 2005/2006 and an interview I did around the same time talking about the touring and why I was doing it.

The Chicago hotel room footage is interesting because I was really tired when I turned the camera on myself and was trying to remember what day it was. I had been on the road for almost a month I believe.

And the best part of all of this is, I have dark hair.

This was at the beginning of what turned in to a seven year odyssey of Moses and I touring the country for two months at a time. All of this material would eventually become my book, Road Dog.

What? You don’t have your copy of Road Dog? Well we can remedy that right now!

Road Dog Reading at O’Connor’s Vault

“As Eat, Pray, Love is to love and spirituality, Road Dog is to the raucous, independent, and contented life.” – William M. Akers, author Your Screenplay Sucks!, Mrs. Ravenbach’s Way

“Kerouac meets Truffaut in this road trip gem. All the ache and passion of film-making, heart-felt by independent filmmaker, Kelley Baker on a trip across America. Enjoy this read as I did on this road well-traveled.” – Paul Diener, Producer

Here is a part of the Reading I did at O’Connor’s Vault in March. I am reading an excerpt from the chapter, The Fiona Tour. It’s about the time my daughter went out on tour with me when she was 15 and our first stop was an art gallery that had an exhibition of Sex Toys. I hope you like this excerpt more than Fiona liked the exhibition…

I want to thank Don Campbell and Whit Draper for their musical accompaniment, Enie Vaisburd for filming this and my daughter Fiona for putting up with her Dad.

Thanks for watching and if you don’t have your copy of Road Dog we can remedy that right now!
