Kay Boyle Updates

I just sent this out to the people who have donated so far…

Hello Everyone,

I apologize for the impersonal email but this is the most efficient way to get hold of all of you at once.

I just want to give you an update on the progress of the Kay Boyle Documentary.

As most of you know I was on tour for the last couple months so I wasn’t able to accomplish as much as I’d hoped while on the road. (Although I did meet a few people who will be helping us out down the road.)

I have raised roughly $3500 of the $6000 I set out to raise for the digital transfers and I want to thank you for all of your support at this point.

The first few hours of the original negative has been transferred to digital tape and it looks wonderful. I am amazed at how good the 25-year-old negative has held up. The colors are vibrant, the exposures all look good and individuals like Studs Terkel feel like they are jumping off the screen. I am really happy.

The interviews and conversations that I recorded over the years on both cassette and digital audio tape are fine and have been loaded on to the hard drives. They sound good.

We have had a set back with the quarter-inch audiotapes, they are starting to flake. The flaking is due to their age (nothing lasts forever), which means that the tape is literally falling apart. The solution is to have the tapes “baked” which is exactly what it sounds like. We will need to heat the tapes up to a certain temperature let them sit for a bit and them put them on to the tape recorder and transfer them on to the hard drives. The heat will basically hold the magnetic tape stock together so it won’t flake. I have a friend in LA who is going to teach me how to do this myself so I can save the material on the tapes. If I can do this myself this will save the project a lot of money, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.  I do have the audio backed up on another format so if the “baking” doesn’t work I still have other options.

I have been spending quite a few hours scanning a couple hundred still images from Kay’s life and I still have a couple hundred more to go. I have purchased additional hard drives to store the material we have so far.

I am feeling really good about moving forward on the film again and I will continue to keep you updated on the progress.

Once again, Thank You for your continued support and if you know of anyone else who also might be interested in contributing please let me know.

Sincerely,

Kelley
